Top Chitral attractions
The Chitral Fort, Shahi Qila
The old royal fort of the Mehtars of Chitral, standing above the river in the town, with the ruler's quarters and towers. A short heritage tour beside the Shahi Masjid.
The Shahi Masjid
The white marble royal mosque beside the fort, built by the Mehtar in 1924, the landmark of Chitral town and an easy stop on the city tour.
Tirich Mir
The highest peak of the Hindu Kush at 7,708 metres, the crown of the range, rising over the Chitral valley. On a clear day it fills the skyline above the town, seen best from the Birmoglasht viewpoint, with a base camp trek for stronger walkers.
Garam Chashma
The natural hot springs about forty five kilometres up a side valley from Chitral, set among the mountains and long used for their warm mineral water, with trout in the streams. A scenic half day drive and a soak.
The Kalash valleys
The three Kalash valleys of Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir sit a short drive from Chitral, home to the Kalash people and their distinct culture. A day trip or an overnight from town.
The Shandur Pass
The high pass toward Gilgit at about 3,700 metres, home to the Shandur polo festival each July, where Chitral and Gilgit meet on the highest polo ground on earth. On the longer Chitral routes rather than the base plan.
Chitral Gol National Park
The national park in the hills above Chitral town, home to the Kashmir markhor, the snow leopard, and the Himalayan ibex, with alpine meadows and pine forest. A wildlife and nature half day, arranged with a permit and a guide.
